Shell Souvenirs
The strategic location of Mactan, Cebu at the heart of the Visayas and the relatively peaceful situation in the area encouraged shell collectors to acquire shells from the fishermen in this area. With the development of the tourism industry in the Visayas region in the 1960’s and 1970’s, the government promoted shells and shell crafts as souvenir items for tourists to bring back to their countries. The development of shell carfts industry of Cebu was also attributed to the increasing tourist arrivals in the country and by the government’s effort in intensifying the development of cottage industries that are a potential dollar earner.
The shell crafts and other shell souvenirs in Lapu Lapu were originally made by hand by the locals in the place. Tourist are fond of buying those kinds of souvenirs because it is really creative.
